Back in my college days a quarter century ago, I wandered into Black Swan Books near the University of Kentucky campus. Little did I know I would still be buying books from owner Michael Courtney all these years later.

After graduate school when my wife Traci was attending UK, Michael was kind enough to give me a part time job at Black Swan. I couldn’t tell you how many books I’ve put plastic dust jacket covers on. Traci ended up babysitting the Courtney kids who are now in college, and we even housesat at the Courtney home. It was a fun time.

Joe Draper, the horse racing writer at the New York Times, just wrote a feature on Black Swan and Michael on his NYT blog The Rail. Like Joe Draper explains, it’s always fun to get those books wrapped in butcher paper from Lexington.

In an age when book stores are closing everywhere, Black Swan stands as a model of what a used and rare bookstore ought to be. If you find yourself anywhere near Lexington, Kentucky, take the time to drop by.
